Most likely dating back all the way to the Stone Age, around 20,000 BC, the first civilized people known to have made use of bows and arrows were the ancient Egyptians. Archery in China dates back to the Shang dynasty. Each three man counterpart in a war chariot during that time contained a driver, an archer, and a lancer. Much later, particularly after the invention of gunpowder and the evolution of its use in weapons, archery became more a tournament sport, as it remains today.
