I do not know what the weather is like where you are, but today where I am it is in the seventies. It is difficult for me to believe that it is this warm on the first day of March, but I am definitely not complaining. It just gets me more and more anxious for bow hunting. The spring season for bow hunting turkeys is coming up on us rather quickly. Let me just say that not much excites me more than knowing this. I feel like I have been cooped up for too long and I am ready to get some turkeys.

A little fun fact for you: turkey hunting is actually the fastest growing type of hunting in the United States. So more and more people are catching on to the fun and excitement that is turkey hunting. If you are itching to get out there like I am, take a look at the infographic showing arrow shot placement for wild turkeys.

Admit it: during the cold winter months when snow lays heavy on the ground and the hunting is sparse, you’re itching to get a little bow action but there seems no where to turn. How about trying a crossbow snow ball launcher? I know, it’s nothing compared to the thrill of tracking your prey through the shrouded woods and scoring a big kill — but imagine stalking your buddies with a crossbow that can hurl snowballs. What could beat that?

Here is a video from the guys at ThinkGeek demonstrating the snowball launching crossbow in action. Although they are short on snow, they’ve found a creative work-around involving yummy snack cakes. I wouldn’t recommend buying those little snowball cakes and using them instead of real snow, however, because the stickiness could cause the weapon to misfire, or damage its inner mechanisms. Since we are entering the coldest part of the year, you probably won’t have long to wait for the real stuff anyway.

Bow hunting is gaining more popularity despite its difficulty. Many states have outlawed the running of dogs to assist in hunting deer and quail, and turkeys as well, and as a result, many hunters have begun to research ways of getting back to the basics of hunting. Bow hunting is made even more difficult in many states because of the laws surrounding the proximity of the hunter and his or her prey. The laws vary from state to state, so knowing the rules in your area is of great importance to anyone trying to have a successful go of bow hunting.

The call of tradition is a loud one. Once people get slightly interested in bow hunting, they tend to go all out researching the history and best use of the bow, and they want to know what kind will be the best to use. People are just as enthusiastic about their bows as gun users are about their weapons — and maybe even more so. Bow design and use dates back to the most primitive days of civilization, and so there is a romance involved in taking up the bow rather than a gun, and going one on one against nature.

Here is a video that can teach you more about how bows are made and what makes them so excellent to own and use.

Be sure to check guidelines in your own state before you adhere to any dates listed above. State guidelines must conform with these federal ones in so far as they might fall within them, but exact dates in your state may fall anywhere inside of these dates. Also, be sure to obtain any permits for doe hunting.

Here are a few more useful points to consider:

The following are things that are legal during bow hunting season.

to be afield with both gun and bow or with a gun and any arrows, except that persons who have a concealed weapon permit may carry a concealed handgun for self-defense only.

to hunt with a crossbow and/or have a crossbow afield except for the holders of Class Y or YY permits during designated archery seasons. Crossbows must have:

a draw weight of at least 125 pounds.

a working safety.

bolts at least 18 inches long.

broadheads with at least two cutting edges at least ¾ inch in width.

to hunt deer with arrows having less than two sharp cutting edges, measuring less than ¾ inch in width.

to use a bow-locking device, except with a modified bow permit issued by the Director.

to use an arrow with an explosive, drug-laced or poisoned head or shaft.

Ancient archery has been found in historical evidence in every part of the world. Most likely dating back all the way to the Stone Age, around 20,000 BC, the first civilized people known to have made use of bows and arrows were the ancient Egyptians. Archery in China dates back to the Shang dynasty. Each three man counterpart in a war chariot during that time contained a driver, an archer, and a lancer.

The Horseback Archery Range is a location from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that is located in a wide open area to the north of the Gerudo Fortress. The hero of the game, Link, is able to get into this side adventure of an archery game after summoning the horse, Epona, and getting the exclusive Gerudo Membership Card. From there, Link rides Epona and takes aim with his bow, hitting several tricky targets as he races time to win bonus coins and a Piece of Heart.

Mounted archery is one of the world’s most difficult skills to master in real life. It can take years to become even slightly competent at horseback archery. Link makes it seem so easy! But in the words of the Gerudo Master herself:

“After a lot of hard practice and training, we finally have the skill to hit the bull’s eye while riding like the wind! When you finally learn how to ride a horse, you should come back and try it. It’s a dangerous sport, but it’s fun!”

Link is equipped with twenty arrows he can shoot at targets as Epona gallops across the course, and it only costs him 20 rupees. Link earns 100 bonus points for each target he hits. Even failing to hit the bulleyes, Link is awarded bonuses based on the distance and difficulty of the shot. If he tops out with a high score of 1500, he can win a larger quiver to hold more arrows.

Real mounted archery needs not only training of the rider, but also the horse. It is considered to be a highly specialized martial art that is enjoying a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Ideally, the archer is paired with a horse for the long-term; the two are considered one team with the survival of each depending on the other.

Speaking of archery, one of the most famous legendary figures of all time, Robinhood, was reputed to have been a master archer. Was he real, mythical, or a combination of both? The earliest references to Robin Hood are not found historical records. Neither are they recounted in ballads telling of his many exploits. Various works from different writers have bits and pieces of information dating as early as 1228. The names ‘Robinhood’, ‘Robehod’ or ‘Robbehod’ are found in the rolls of several English judges. These do indicate a historic person.

Some of the first Robin Hood tales are William Langland’s Piers Plowman stories in which a character confesses: “I know not perfectly my Pater noster as the priest singeth,/ But I know rymes of Robyn Hood and Randolf Erl of Chestre.” Implicating that the priest character is a slackard in learning his prayers, but avid in memorizing stories of Robin Hood, seems to be the case.
